Figuring Things Out

A Journey to Problem Solving and Discovery

Life is full of puzzles; big and small, simple and complex. Whether navigating a career change, solving a problem, or understanding the complexities of human relationships, you are constantly in the process of “figuring things out.” The phrase itself implies a process of discovery, analysis, and decision-making. But what does it truly mean to “figure things out,” and how can you approach it in a more effective, productive way?

Let’s break it down with eight (maybe not so simple, but effective) steps.

1. Life is Uncertain

The first step in figuring things out is recognizing that uncertainty is part of the journey. Not knowing exactly what to do or how to do it can be frustrating, but it’s also the starting point for growth and learning. When you embrace uncertainty, you open yourself up to new ideas, approaches, and solutions that you might not have considered if you were seeking a quick fix.

Uncertainty can be overwhelming, especially if the situation or task is difficult or unfamiliar. By staying persistent, you start to make sense of and gradually piece things together. Uncertainty can be a necessary space for exploration and understanding.

2. Break the Problem Down

One of the most effective strategies for figuring things out is to break a complex issue down into smaller, more manageable parts. This allows you to tackle a problem systematically instead of feeling overwhelmed by its size.

For example, let’s say you’re working on a project at work that involves several moving parts. Instead of trying to handle everything at once, you might start by breaking the project down into key tasks. Once you focus on one task at a time, you’ll likely feel more in control and less daunted by the overall complexity.

In problem-solving, this can be particularly helpful for identifying root causes. If you’re facing an issue, isolating different components can often reveal where the problem lies.

3. Use Creative Problem Solving

Figuring things out often involves thinking outside the box. Creative problem-solving requires you to step away from conventional methods and explore unconventional ideas. While this might feel uncomfortable at first, it is often where the best solutions lie.

Consider a company facing declining sales. Traditional solutions may include offering discounts or advertising more heavily. But creative solutions might involve rethinking the product itself, finding new markets, or changing the way it’s marketed, approaches that could lead to long-term growth and innovation.

Sometimes, the best way to come up with a creative solution is by stepping back from the problem entirely. Giving your brain a break can often lead to those “aha!” moments when the pieces finally fall into place.

4. Learn from Failure

When you’re figuring things out, failure is often part of the process. In fact, failure can be an incredibly valuable tool for learning. When things don’t work out as planned, it gives you the opportunity to assess what went wrong and refine your approach. This is also how you can evolve from beginner to expert in any field.

For instance, when inventors are working on creating new products, they rarely get things right on the first try. Instead, they test, tweak, fail, and improve over time. Each failure provides insights into what works and what doesn’t, gradually guiding them toward the right solution.

Rather than fearing failure, view it as a steppingstone. As something that offers valuable feedback and brings you closer to figuring things out.

5. Seek External Input

Sometimes, the best way to figure things out is by talking to others. Whether it’s getting advice from a mentor, collaborating with colleagues, or asking for feedback from friends, external input can provide new perspectives and ideas that you might not have considered on your own.

In fact, one of the most powerful tools in problem-solving is the ability to ask the right questions. Asking others how they would approach a situation can offer insights that could lead to a breakthrough. Surrounding yourself with diverse thinkers (people from different backgrounds, disciplines, and experiences) can often be the catalyst for fresh ideas.

6. Trust Your Intuition

While logic and analysis are crucial when figuring things out, intuition often plays an equally important role. Your gut feelings or “hunches” are often based on experiences and knowledge you’ve accumulated over time, even if you can’t immediately articulate why a certain choice feels right.

For example, when making a big decision, whether it’s about a career move or a personal relationship, you may feel torn between two options. Even if the data suggests one option is more practical, your intuition might push you toward something that feels more aligned with your values or long-term goals.

The key here is to strike a balance between rational thinking and intuitive insights. Sometimes, combining both leads to the most well-rounded decisions.

7. Be Patient

Figuring things out is rarely a process that can be rushed. In today’s fast-paced world, the desire for quick answers and instant solutions is strong. However, the more complex the problem, the more time it often takes to reach a satisfactory resolution.

Patience is essential. Whether you’re tackling a personal challenge or solving a difficult issue, the process can take time. It’s important to avoid the temptation to settle for the first solution that comes along, especially if it feels rushed or incomplete. This could mean months, or even years, of exploration, training, and setbacks. But with patience, persistence, and a willingness to keep learning, you’ll eventually find clarity.

8. Stay Open to New Information

Lastly, part of figuring things out is staying flexible and open to new information as it arises. You may have biases and assumptions, but to truly solve a problem, you must be willing to adapt when presented with new evidence or perspectives.

In fact, some of the greatest discoveries in history have come about when someone was open to new ideas that challenged the status quo. By staying open-minded and curious, you allow yourself the freedom to discover better solutions that might not have been obvious at the onset.

Figuring things out is not a one-time event but a continual process that requires adaptability, patience, and a willingness to learn. Whether solving problems, making decisions, or navigating life’s twists and turns, the key is to stay curious, persistent, and believe that everything can be figured out.

As you embrace uncertainty, break down problems into manageable parts, tap into creativity, learn from failure, seek input from others, trust your intuition, and stay patient and open, you gradually unlock new insights and solutions. In doing so, you don’t just “figure things out” once, you cultivate the ability to keep figuring things out, one challenge at a time.

In the end, it’s not just about the answers you find, but the growth that comes from the journey itself.
