Metamorphosis…A Journey to Transformation

When you were born into the world, you were a pure, innocent being. As you age, you experience various circumstances – geography, economics, family dynamics, interactions.  Some help you, some hurt you.  Either way, only you can free yourself from or help yourself through any of it.  You have an innate wisdom to guide yourself through difficult times and emerge better and stronger – like a caterpillar into a butterfly.

The caterpillar’s metamorphosis process involves body tissue breaking down and reforming as wings, legs, and other adult parts. Changing from a caterpillar to a butterfly or moth prevents adults and young from competing for the same food or risking infection from the same diseases. It’s nature.  It’s beautiful.  It’s protective. It’s a process of transformation. 

This transformation can illustrate human life:

  • Caterpillar (life) – as it presents itself
  • Cocoon (death/transition) – the struggle, but also an innate ability to transform
  • Butterfly (resurrection/new life) – the beauty on the other side

Allow this visual to help you picture the incredible feats you can accomplish when you believe in yourself and give the space needed for the full experience of life. Allow it to offer trust in your body’s innate ability to self-protect. Allow it to enable hope to remind you of the beauty and potential that is within you – ready to shine through you on the outside.

Metamorphosis, whether physical or metaphorical, is a profound and transformative process. It signifies a radical change, a transition from one state of being to another. By examining the emotional dimensions of metamorphosis, we gain insight into how change affects us on multiple levels.

Metamorphosis often evokes a complex range of emotions. Personal metamorphosis can be both exhilarating and daunting. The excitement of newfound potential contrasts sharply with the fear of the unknown.

Challenges may include:

  • Fear and Uncertainty – The transition period in personal metamorphosis can be scary. The discomfort of leaving behind old habits or identities can lead to anxiety and self-doubt.
  • Isolation – As you change, there may be a sense of detachment from your previous self or social circle. This feeling of isolation can be emotionally taxing, requiring adjustment and redefinition of relationships.

On the flipside, there are positive aspects:

  • Growth and Renewal – Metamorphosis offers the promise of renewal and growth. Personal development, such as overcoming a challenge or embarking on a new career, can lead to a sense of accomplishment and self-discovery. The emotional rewards often include increased confidence and a deeper understanding of yourself.
  • Empowerment – Transformative experiences can empower you. You often emerge from these changes with a newfound sense of strength and capability, having navigated through adversity or something unknown and new.

Because of the complexity, metamorphosis requires emotional resilience. The ability to navigate through the complexities of change involves embracing uncertainty, managing stress, and adapting to new realities. It takes resilience to nurture the positive aspects of metamorphosis while mitigating the challenges.

Although the experience can be beautiful, it is also an emotional journey.  With a broad spectrum of feelings, it is important to acknowledge and understand these emotions.  Embracing the process of metamorphosis with empathy and resilience can ultimately lead to meaningful growth and transformation. All of it prepares you for wings to fly, stronger legs to stand on, and tools to protect you from things that would have once hurt you.

It all reminds me of the saying:

“What if I fall?” Oh, my darling, what if you fly.” 

My hope for you is to seek the ways to fly and the bravery (and trust in yourself) to try.

The triennial theme for 2024-2026 is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” with the call to action “Start the Conversation”. This theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing the stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides.
