Self-trust is one of the most powerful virtues you have. To succeed in anything, you must possess the ability to trust yourself. Otherwise, you are living through someone else, you are trusting someone else to offer you what you need, you are giving up the power to do what is best for you. You have the power and the means within yourself to know how to do what needs to be done. It begins with trusting that voice or feeling within yourself. Sometimes it may be a little whisper, sometimes a strong “force”. Either way, if you truly stopped and listened to your own body, something inside would tell you. That is your self-conscious. That is how you are made.
There is a saying “the opposite of uncertainty isn’t certainty, it’s self-trust.” When you trust yourself and your abilities, you will tend to remain calmer and more rational. There is less second-guessing, less overwhelm, more relaxation and knowing that you are doing what is best for you. On the flipside, when you don’t trust yourself, you tend to create self-perpetuating cycles of stress and anxiety. You may remain in a state of fear and worry. A state of turmoil.
Here are a few ways to regain self-trust:
- Set small goals and work to achieve them
- Keep daily promises to yourself
- Forgive yourself
- Try to gain self-understanding on past decisions
- Identify what you have learned from past experiences
- Work on positive self-talk
- Practice identifying your intuition (gut feelings)
- Remind yourself of good decisions you have made
- Validate your emotions
- Acknowledge your innate worth
- Act in a way that respects and honors who you are
- Accept your imperfections
