The Privilege of the World is Being Who You Are…

Feb 25, 2025

In a world with nearly 8 billion people, it’s easy to forget how unique and rare your individual existence is. Yet, one of the greatest privileges you can experience is simply being yourself. The world, in all its vastness, is shaped by the singular combination of thoughts, experiences, and actions that belong to each person. The privilege of being you isn’t just about existing, it’s about the remarkable confluence of factors that make you who you are, and how, in your own way, you contribute to the world. This privilege, a subtle yet powerful force, is often taken for granted, yet shapes both personal identity and societal impact.

When you pause to consider it, the odds of your existence are mind-boggling. Think about the intricate series of events that had to align for you to be here – millions of genetic factors, historical moments, family dynamics, and even personal choices that led to the creation of your unique self. This is not just a matter of being alive; it’s about the specific you that you are, with your thoughts, dreams, and personality. In a sense, your very existence is a miraculous and rare occurrence in the timeline of history.

Being born into a particular time, place, and set of circumstances is not a random accident. It’s an intricate thread in the tapestry of life, woven through countless generations. The privilege of being you lies in the fact that no one else has lived the exact life you have lived, nor will anyone live it the exact same way. Every experience you have (joys, sorrows, triumphs, and challenges) shapes you into someone entirely distinct.

Another privilege of being you lies in the lens through which you see the world. Your perspective is shaped by your background, your cultural influences, your education, and even your innate temperament. The way you interpret the world around you, make decisions, and navigate your relationships is unique to you.

This perspective isn’t just a passive way of viewing the world; it’s an active force that influences how you interact with others, how you approach problems, and how you create change. For example, an artist may see beauty in what others overlook, a scientist might find answers in places others consider impossible, and a teacher might connect with students in ways that change lives forever. Your perspective has the power to shift the world around you, if only you allow it to.

In a world where countless opinions, ideas, and voices coexist, one of the greatest privileges is having the power to express yourself. Your voice, whether through speech, writing, art, or action, holds the potential to influence, inspire, and change the world. This voice comes from your lived experiences and your understanding of what matters, whether it’s through the stories you tell, the truth you seek, or the compassion you share.

You may often underestimate the power of your voice because you live in a time where the volume of information is overwhelming. Yet, it is the uniqueness of your voice that contributes to the rich diversity of thoughts that make up the human experience. Whether it’s standing up for a cause, sharing a vulnerable moment, or simply offering a word of encouragement, your voice holds transformative potential. The privilege of being you is the understanding that your voice – your truth – can leave a lasting mark on others.

One of the more profound privileges of being you is the opportunity to contribute to the future. Every action, no matter how small, is part of the ongoing story of humanity. Through your choices, you have the power to alter the trajectory of your own life and, by extension, the world. Through your work, your relationships, or even the values you pass on to future generations, the impact of being you ripples through time, as your decisions shape the world that follows. The privilege here is not just in the power to act, but in the freedom to create meaning from your life. How you define success, happiness, or fulfillment (and the choices you make in pursuit of these) contributes to the unfolding narrative of your collective human experience.

Living authentically is perhaps the greatest privilege of all. In a society where external pressures often push you to conform or hide parts of yourself, the freedom to simply be is a rare and precious gift. When you are fully yourself, without pretension or fear of judgment, you allow the world to experience you in your most genuine form. This kind of authenticity can be liberating, not just for you, but for those around you as well.

By embracing who you are (your quirks, your passions, your flaws, and your strengths) you set the stage for deeper connections and greater fulfillment. You also create space for others to do the same, sparking a ripple effect of authenticity that enriches the social fabric of the world. The privilege of being you is the ability to live with integrity, knowing that the world doesn’t need you to be anyone other than yourself.

While it’s true that not everyone has the same opportunities, there is a profound freedom in making decisions that align with your values, desires, and aspirations. This freedom is a privilege often not fully realized until it is consciously reflected upon.

Whether it’s choosing your career, your relationships, or your personal goals, the ability to determine the course of your life is one of the greatest gifts you can experience. Being able to shape your own destiny is a rare opportunity that empowers you to live with purpose and intentionality. This privilege comes with responsibility, but it also holds the key to living a life that is deeply satisfying and uniquely your own.

Lastly, the privilege of being you is the ability to grow and evolve. Humans are not static beings; rather exist in a constant state of transformation. The privilege of personal growth means that no matter where you start, you can change. You can shed old beliefs, develop new skills, and learn from your mistakes. This capacity for growth ensures that no matter what challenges you face, you always have the potential to rise, adapt, and redefine yourself.

The world, in its dynamic state, mirrors this potential. Just as you can change, so too can the world be reshaped by your efforts and aspirations. Just by being you, you contribute something irreplaceable to the world…and that is a gift not just to yourself, but to all those whose lives you touch. The privilege of being you is not just in the person you are today, but in the person you have yet to become.
